Excerpt from The Annotated Liturgy: Containing Full Instructions for the Proper Reading of the Prayer-Book
HE bad reading, as a rule, Of clergymen is too well known - and even frequently acknowledged by themselves - to be dilated upon. Much of this, how ever, is due, primarily, to the fact that Elocution is most frequently neglected in seminaries of education, and afterwards in the various Theological Colleges; next, to the erroneous manner in which it is too Often taught; next, to the neglect of the Examining Chaplains in not making it one Of the subjects Of examination; and lastly, to the practice Of Intoning.
On these various points I prefer that clergymen should speak for themselves.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book provides annotated pieces to improve proficiency in reading the Book of Common Prayer. It examines common faults in reading, such as poor articulation or monotonous delivery, and explores the ways to correct them. Throughout the text, the author argues a strong case for eliminating Intoning. Advocating that reading and saying prayers should not be sung, the author claims that intoning is damaging to the voice and makes the message harder to understand. The book draws inspiration from esteemed scholars who, the author claims, have echoed the same concerns and proposed solutions. The compilation of these annotated pieces is said to be informed by feedback and suggestions from schoolmasters and teachers who have used them to great effect.
