Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book provides an accessible introduction to the literary greats of the Elizabethan era who shaped and refined the English language as we know it. The author explores the distinct styles of these visionaries and their impact on literature before examining their thematic preoccupations and ideas in greater depth. The book situates these literary giants within the wider context of the period's social, political, and religious landscape, arguing that the upheaval of the Reformation fostered an environment in which great minds could flourish. It highlights key moments in history that influenced the distinct preoccupations and themes in their work, particularly the rise of Protestantism and the discovery of the New World. The author goes on to observe how these playwrights drew upon ancient Greek and Roman mythology and characters and blended them with an emerging national identity to create thoroughly English masterpieces. The author discusses how their work balanced the savagery of life with its inherent beauty, exploring the darker aspects of human nature alongside moments of great tenderness. Ultimately, this book is an invitation to engage with the works of these literary masters and their enduring insights into the human condition.
