Excerpt from German Reader: To Succeed the German Course
This German Reader is intended especially for the use of students in Colleges, Academies, and High-schools who have finished the author's German Course.
We would draw attention to the following features in the German Reader: The selections are made from the works of the best German writers of the present century. While a fair predominance is given to the writers of the first half of this century, which is usually termed by historians the second classical period of the German language and litera ture,* due, prominence is also given to the language of the present day, as employed by the best writers of the last twenty years. That the student may feel as definitely as possible the influence and Spirit of the language, the selec tions have especial reference to Germany. German history, biography, geography, mythology, and social life and cus toms are largely illustrated. An additional feature in the selections, though one entirely subordinate to the chief oh ject of the Reader, which is to present representative exam ples of written and Spoken German, is the valuable informa tion that is given with reference to Germany, and which is usually not accessible, in a convenient and attractive form, to the American student.
