Excerpt from The First Book of Caesar's Gallic War: Edited for the Use of Schools With Notes and Vocabulary
Caesar's Gallic War will probably continue to be, as it has long been, the battle-ground upon which young students will struggle for the mastery of Latin syntax. It is hoped that the convenient form of this edition will of itself be sufficient warrant for its appearance. It is a great advantage to the learner to have a small volume to handle, a limited and definite vocabulary, and full notes. These, with synonyms at the foot of each page to widen his vocabulary, and word-groups to correlate the words and serve as a guide to his memory, furnish a combina tion of helps which should make easier and more suc cessful than is often the case the efforts of the pupil who earnestly attacks this bit of trying Latin. Certainly one who has mastered its difficulties of construction and its vocabulary may read quite rapidly and easily the later books of the Gallic War or approach with confidence the reading of another Latin author.
