Excerpt from The Annotated Bible

The city of Philippi was built as a military position by Philip the Great of Macedon to keep the wild Thracians in check, which were the neighbors of the Macedonians. Later it became a Roman colony by Augustus, as a memorial of his victory over Brutus and Cassius. It was not a very important city. The Jews had not settled there at all, so that the city did not contain a synagogue. In Acts xvi:12 Philippi is called the chief city of that part of Macedonia. This does not mean that Philippi was the chief city of all Macedonia, which Thessalonica was; but Philippi was the chief city of that district and the first city to which Paul and his companions came. The historical record of the Apostle's visit to Philippi and how the Gospel was preached there, for the first time on European ground, is found in the book of Acts (chap. Xvi). The conversion of Lydia, her hospitality to the servants of Christ, the demon possessed girl and her deliverance, the suffering of Paul and Silas on account of it, their prayer and praise in the prison, the earthquake, the conversion of the jailer and of his house, are the interesting and blessed incidents connected with the beginning of the church in Philippi. The Apostle probably visited this city twice after this (acts xl and though the details of these visits are not reported in the book of Acts.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is an extended commentary on the Epistle to the Philippians, examining the letter's historical context, primary themes, and practical applications for Christians. The Epistle to the Philippians is widely believed to be the result of Paul's imprisonment in Rome during the mid-60s AD. It is a letter of encouragement and exhortation written to the church in Philippi, a group of Philippian believers who had supported Paul's ministry and for whom he held a deep affection. The major themes of the letter include the importance of Christian unity and love, faithful service in the face of opposition, and enduring joy in the midst of hardship. The author argues that the Philippians maintains a special place for Paul, as he had a unique bond with them, having personally shared the Gospel and seeing the church there grow. He emphasizes the importance of knowing Christ Jesus as the foundation of Christian living, stressing that we should imitate Christ even to the point of sacrificing our own interests for the sake of others. This book explores the Epistle to the Philippians in-depth and offers a thorough and insightful reading of the text. Expanding on the historical and contextual information surrounding the letter, the author enriches the reader's understanding of the epistle's key themes. The author demonstrates that the letter is not only a valuable historical document, but provides relevant and life-changing guidance for Christians today.
