Such has been the increase of intelligence and the growth of liberal ideas among all classes of men during the last half century. Both in this country and Great Britain. That we, at this dis tance of time, can with difficulty realize the extent of the prejudices which blinded the eyes of the people of those days. The farmer who ventured to make experiments, to strike out new paths of practice, or to adopt new modes of culture, subjected himself to the ridicule of a whole neighborhood. For many years, there fore, the same routine of farm labor had been pursued in the older settlements, the son planting.
