Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores a shift in San Francisco's musical leadership from European-born to American-born conductors in the early 20th century. The author uses the example of Alfred Hertz and his contributions to the San Francisco Symphony between 1915 and 1930. The author claims that Hertz's musical leadership during this period marked a departure from the previous German Romantic style of conducting. Hertz's approach emphasized a lighter, more rhythmically precise style, influenced by the French school of conducting and the rise of recording technology. The book draws on primary sources such as board meeting minutes, reviews, and interviews to document Hertz's tenure and the challenges he faced, including the need to raise funds to maintain the orchestra and the changing musical tastes of the public. The author argues that Hertz's tenure played a crucial role in establishing San Francisco as a major musical center and in shaping the American orchestral sound.
