Excerpt from My Adventures in the Congo
I started the next day well by having a tussle with the stewardess, who did not want to bring me a cup of coffee. She told me that servants' breakfast was served at however, after a Short but wordy war, I got my coffee. During the day I asked Miss X if I might take my meals with the passengers, pointing out that as I was a first-class passenger it seemed a pity not to have the benefit thereof. To this she agreed, on condition that I sat with the children during their meals, which was no hardship, as they were both charming little folk.
After lunching with the passengers a steward told me that the purser wished to see me. When I got to his room he seemed greatly surprised at my appear ance, asked me to sit down, and then told me how the other maids were jealous because I did not take my meals with them. He was easier to deal with than the stewardess, and, squeezing my hand, said, Whenever you want anything, come to me. This was very gratifying.

This book serves up an account of a courageous solo journey by a woman setting out to explore the Belgian Congo in 1909, a time shrouded in controversy regarding human rights abuses. Assuming the role of a lady's maid, the author infiltrates the Belgian Congo undetected, later revealing her true intentions. The author's travelogue captures honest impressions of life in the Congo and provides valuable perspectives on the atrocities that plagued its people. This book poses the question of whether the Belgian Congo's atrocities truly occurred and to what extent. It functions as a historical record of the atrocities, offering a firsthand account of the atrocities by a careful observer on the scene in that era. Through the author's keen observations and conversations with the people she meets, the book delves into the complex themes of colonial oppression and the resilience of the human spirit.
