Excerpt from Guide to the Choice of Classical Books
The following list of books was drawn up in the first instance for the use of my own pupils at King's College. It is designed to supply a practical want, which has been often felt by myself in common, I Should think, with most other teachers and learners who have been engaged in the study of Greek and Roman authors. Both as learner and teacher I have continually found it a matter of difficulty to ascertain what were the best and most useful books in the different departments of Classical study. To a certain extent the excellent 'bibliotheca Scriptorum Classicorum,' by Engelmann, with its continuation by C. H. Herrmann, supplies the deficiency as regards German editions but as a rule English students very much prefer English notes, and an indiscriminate list, such as is given in the Biblio theca,' is not of much use even to one who can read German and Latin freely, unless he brings with him such a know ledge of bibliography as will enable him to judge which editors are likely to be most helpful and trustworthy.
