A travers les révolutions Fréquentes qui éclat'erent dans le Milanais au cours des vue et xuuc siècles, il faut constater une augmentation constante de la richesse publique et privée. Les Lombards étaient par un peu chant naturel commerçants ou banquiers; en outre, ils étaient profondément religieux. On comprendra donc facilement que cette époque vit: se fonder, a côté d'un grand nombre d'églises et de communautés, des mo numents municipaux ou privés; chaque ville voulait avoir son Palazzo pubblico, son Broletto, sa Loggia, où se réunissaient les marchands pour traiter leurs affaires. Un sentiment artistique, qui n'allait pas tarder a se développer, commença ainsi à percer. Matteo Vis conti embellissait la cathédrale de Monza, et faisait construire à Pavie la belle église de Santa Maria del Car mine, dont la façade de briques rouges foncées, déco rée de piliers terminés par des clochetons, devait servir de prototype à bien d'autres églises en Lem bardie.
