Excerpt from Systematic Code for the Relative Decimal Classification of a Card Bibliography of Electrochemistry and Allied Subjects: Amplifications by A. L. Voge
The Dewey Relative Decimal System which forms the basis of this code was first devised by Melvil Dewey, Librarian of the New York State Library in 1873 for cataloging books according to the subject treated. The main classes chosen by him then have since received more and more detailed subdivision.
