Excerpt from The Fundamental Principles Involved in Dr. Edward Caird's Philosophy of Religion: Inaugural-Dissertation, Zur Erlangung Der Doktorwürde Der Honen Philosophischen Fakultät Der Friedrich-Alexanders-Universität Erlangen
The Caird brothers have been recognized for nearly a generation as belonging to the ranks of the most important Scotch philosophers. John Caird, the elder of the two, was principal of the University of Glasgow. Edward, the author of the work here reviewed, was for some time professor of Moral Philosophy in the same university. After resigning this position, he became master of Balliol College, Oxford, which position he filled until quite recently. Previous to the appear ance of this work, he had proven his ability as a philosopher by his Critical Philosophy of Kant, and The Social Philosophy and Religion of Comte. The work here discussed is recognized by friends and foes as one of the clearest and most representative statements of the views of anglo-hegelians. The work has been widely read, and the influence of the lectures was so great that none but Hegelians were chosen for some time afterwards to deliver the Gifford Lectures. Dr. Caird professes to write for those who are destitute of faith, but are terrified at scepticism and proposes to show how in a general way the theory of evolution will help those in this frame of mind. It is the purpose of this criticism to show in a general way how the position of Dr. Caird is Open to attack.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book analyzes the evolution of religion from a philosophical perspective, examining its origins and development throughout history. The author posits that as mankind's consciousness has evolved, so too has our understanding of the divine. Beginning with an objective perception of external forces, humans progressed to a more subjective interpretation, centered on the inner self, before ultimately arriving at a synthesis of both perspectives in the form of true religion. The author traces this evolution through a variety of religious traditions, from polytheistic beliefs to monotheism. Along the way, the book grapples with fundamental questions about the nature of God, the relationship between subject and object, and the meaning of evolution itself. By exploring these ideas, the book provides a deeper understanding of the role religion has played in shaping human history and thought.
