L' am piezza della mente e la varietà delle attitudini che in lui si raccoglievano congiunta a un carattere di pellegrinita che risplendeva in tutta la sua persona, rendono difficile il defi nirlo; imperocche egli non somigliava in nessuna cosa che a sè medesimo; si cospicua era l' impronta, che dall' indivi duo nelle doti comuni si rifletteva. La qualità che in lui aveva il predominio era una fermezza imperturbabile di ra gione; e non ho mai praticato alcun uomo, che per coraggio di spirito lo pareggiasse. Come la maggior parte degli uo mini insigni, egli dovette la sua grandezza solo a sè stesso. Ricevette un' educazione pia e virtuosa, ma così casalinga ed angusta, che mal può farsene un concetto proporzionato chi non ha conosciute le consuetudini di certe antiche famiglie piemontesi.
