Excerpt from The Substance of a Pamphlet, Entitled a Solemn Review of the Custom of War: Showing, That War Is the Effect of Popular Delusion, and Proposing a Remedy

Perhaps all will admit that the custom could not be honourably introduced, until they separated, and formed two or more distinct governments. But would this change of circumstances dissolve their ties as brethren, and their obligations as accountable beings? Bald the organization of distinct governments confer a right on rulers to appeal to arms for the settlement of controversies? Is it not manifest, that no period can be assigned, at which the introduction of such a custom would not be absolute murder? And shall a custom which must have been murderous at its commencement, be now Upheld as necessary and honourable?

But, says the objector, in determining the question, whether waris now the effect of delusion, we must consider what mankind are, and not what they would have been, had wars never been introduced.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is a treatise against war, popularly regarded as a necessary evil by the author's contemporaries. The author claims that the use of war as a tool to solve conflicts is both futile and immoral, and reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of Christian teachings. The author was a member of one of the first peace societies, which formed with the intent of changing how people think about war, and ultimately abolishing it entirely. He believed that if his contemporaries were to understand the precepts of Christianity, and specifically the instructions to "love thy neighbor," they would not choose to wage war against one another. The author spends some time contextualizing war within the history of human conflict, with particular reference to practices in antiquity such as child sacrifice. He argues that just as human sacrifice fell out of favor, through advances in civilization and moral understanding, so must war. The author also takes aim at the ways in which the trappings of Christianity have been used to justify warmongering. He points specifically to the use of the cross as a battle standard, as well as the practice of soldiers reciting the Lord's Prayer before battle. He argues that these practices are not only hypocritical, but blasphemous. This book is an interesting window into early pacifist thought, and the author makes a compelling case against war. He argues that war is not only unnecessary, but fundamentally incompatible with the teachings of Christ.
