Excerpt from A Qualitative Investigation of the Effect of Mode of Presentation Upon the Process of Learning
The relation of the mode Of presentation of a material to the process of learning it has been approached experimentally from various points of view. Most investigators have sought, with a pedagogical interest, simply to determine the mode of presentation most advantageous in learning; a few have con cerned themselves chiefly with the psychological aspects Of the problem and undertaken to determine the qualitative changes in the complete mental process that arise when the material to be learned is presented to different senses. Our present problem is psychological in this latter sense. In most studies investigators have been content to deal merely with the quantitative aspects of learning and recall, supplementing such data only occasionally by introspections. They have made the analysis of the learning-process almost entirely with reference to the mode of presentation of the material - whether it is visually or auditorially presented, or reinforced by voci motor repetition, for example - and little with respect to the actual sensory terms with which the learner represents the material to himself. For this latter information, as well as for a complete understanding of the problem, an introspective study is essential.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book investigates how people learn by examining the impact that different modes of presentation have on the learning process. Concepts are typically introduced using the author's preferred mode of learning; but by understanding how other learning modes function, knowledge can be more effectively transferred to those with alternate styles. The author analyzes the process of learning from three distinct stages: orienting, passive receptivity, and active recall. These stages emerge regardless of the material being learned or the participant's learning style. While the first stage, orienting, allows the learner to passively take in information, the second stage demands more active engagement. Finally, active recall involves the learner reciting the information they have retained. This process aids in memory formation. Whether a learner is new to a subject or seeks to refine their approach to information retention, this book provides valuable insights into the mechanisms of learning and memory. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
