The presentation of his plan made a departure from the usual classification and nomenclature unavoidable; but no change has been made without thereby securing some practical advantage to the pupil. Indeed, this work would not have been written had not a long experience as a teacher convinced the author that the almost universal antipathy to this science could be overcome only by a wider departure from the Greek and the Latin grammars, and a closer adherence to the structure of the English language than we have had exhibited in our text books.
