Excerpt from An Investigation of the Relative Stability of Vertical Back and Battered Back Dam Sections: A Thesis
These considerations suggest the adaption of a new section viz., one in which the head of water itself is used to lend additional stability, by taking advantage of its vertical component on a battered back.
It has been recently emphasized, that the most important of these new factors is the effect of uplift due to the seepage of water under-the foundation and into xhe body of the dam-itself. Various-assump tions have been made as-to_the amount of this uplift.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a groundbreaking examination of the design and stability of concrete dams, challenging conventional wisdom and offering a comprehensive analysis of the effects of uplift and seepage on dam integrity. The author meticulously compares the performance of straight-back and battered-back dam sections, demonstrating the advantages of the latter in enhancing structural stability and providing a more uniform distribution of stresses. Drawing on extensive research and practical examples, the book provides valuable insights into the critical factors influencing dam design, including foundation conditions, uplift pressures, and the role of various construction materials. The author argues that traditional dam designs often underestimate the impact of uplift, and proposes innovative solutions that incorporate both vertical and horizontal water components to improve dam stability. This book is essential reading for engineers, architects, and anyone involved in the design and construction of concrete dams, offering a fresh perspective on an age-old engineering challenge.
