Excerpt from Stokes Records, Vol. 1 of 4: Notes Regarding the Ancestry and Lives of Anson Phelps Stokes and Helen Louisa (Phelps) Stokes; Part I
Until I retired from business and my eldest son came of age, and Lenox was our country home, the study of genealogy interested me little.
Then remembering my mother's love for that part of New Eng land, where her ancestors had been distinguished from the time of its earliest English settlement, and recollecting that my father, Shortly before his death, had told me of his intention to have some informa tion regarding his family written out, and knowing that this had been deferred too long, I felt great regret that I had not, during my parents' lifetime, shown more interest in such matters, and I thought that I owed it to my children to contribute something toward a record of those from whom they are descended.
