Excerpt from Plain Papers Relating to the Excise Branch of the Inland Revenue Department From 1621 to 1878, or a History of the Excise
Neither exertion nor outlay has been spared in collecting, collat ing, and narrating these widely-scattered facts, which, now that they are brought within the compass of two covers, form a History of the Excise, which, I fondly hope, will be found at once comprehensive and reliable, be found acceptable to the members of my department, and be found a not-unworthy book of general departmental reference.
