The annalistic manner of Thucydides is often dry and tedious. But it is certain that even this manner is an ad vance upon its greatest exponent hitherto, namely Hellanicus and the fact that Thucydides was obliged to establish his own system of chronology makes us charitable. It is easy for us, with our perfected calendar, to fix with precision the temporal relations of events. It was not easy for Thucydides to do so.
