Excerpt from Report of the Select Committee to Investigate the Causes and Circumstances of the Destruction of the Ice-Boats Chesapeake and Maryland: With Accompanying Testimony and Papers, 1872
The evidence in the case of the Maryland does not enable us to fix with any accuracy the cause of her destruction. Three causes have been given for the destruction of the Maryland spontaneous combustion, carelessness or design.
The Committee are not of the opinion that the fire was caused by spontaneous combustion in the waste room, as alleged; and, indeed, the testimony is conflicting as to whether or not the fire originated here.

This book documents the tragedy of the Chesapeake and Maryland iceboats, the consequence of a dispute between the iceboats and private tugboat interests in Baltimore harbor during the late 19th century. The author offers insight into the tumultuous relationship between the two factions and the tragic loss of four consecutive iceboats in succession. The text also explores the evolution of maritime law and insurance underwriting practices, focusing on the unique challenges faced by iceboats during this period and their place within the history of American maritime trade. An insightful look at both the history of icebreaking technology and the policies that governed it, this book delves into the human drama and technological challenges of maintaining commerce during Maryland's harsh winters.
