Excerpt from The Subway Problem: An Address Delivered by William G. McAdoo, Esq. At the Sixth Annual Dinner Under the Auspices of the Board of Trustees of Plymouth Church
The Subway Problem is not so intricate and complex as is generally supposed. It is, in fact, quite simple. The difficulty arises from the con fusion of the public mind, which has been deflected from the main issue by many extraneous considerations. If the essential facts can be put together in an easily comprehensible form, a real service will be rendered. In order to do this, the law governing the construction and operation of subways in New York ought first to be understood.
Upon the Public Service Commission, and upon it alone, rests the duty of laying out and determining routes and of awarding contracts for con struction. After this the Board of Estimate and Apportionment is charged with the duty of approving said contracts and of appropriating the meces sary money to carry them into effect.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book presents an accessible analysis of the debate surrounding the construction of New York Cityâs subway system. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Interborough Rapid Transit Company held a monopoly on the cityâs subway lines. The author reviews an alternative plan put forward in 1911 by William G. McAdoo to establish an independent system. McAdoo argued that an independent system would foster healthy competition and better serve the public, providing more efficient and affordable transportation options. The book delves into the political and economic factors that shaped the debate, exploring the tension between private and public interests. Ultimately, the author concludes that McAdoo's vision for an independent subway system was a missed opportunity that could have had a profound impact on the development of New York City and its transportation infrastructure.
