To adhere to any absolute rules. The' critical apparatus is confined within the narrowest possible limits. It includes all significant variants, While scribal con tractions and alterations in orthography and dialect will be indicated in the text by italics, and will also be tabulated for the sake of clearness in a special list. The introduction will contain a summary account of the transmission of the text, the plan of the edition, the dialect, sources, time and place of origin of the work, the existing editions, if any, as well as the bibliography of the subject. The notes will deal with textual questions only, and will elucidate the most difficult passages in regard both to form and matter. The glossary will explain the rarer words, especially such as are unnoticed by Stratmann and Bradley. Each Volume will conclude with a complete index of names.
