Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book analyzes the inequalities of the draft during the Civil War using statistics and tables to provide a detailed account of the inaccuracies and excessive enrollments that plagued the process, particularly in cities like New York and Brooklyn. The author examines the broader historical context of conscription in the United States, focusing on the legal basis of the draft and the challenges faced by enrolling officers. Drawing on primary sources from the War Department and census data, the book provides a comprehensive analysis of the draft's impact on different demographics and regions. The author argues that the draft was fundamentally flawed, leading to unfair quotas and the need for local and state bounties to incentivize volunteering. In doing so, this book sheds important light on the complexities of raising an army during a time of national crisis and the struggles for equity and fairness within it.
