A period of more than thirty years of peaceful intercourse withthe great nations of the earth had left the recent history of the United States without any great events of a military character at the commencement of the war with Mexico. The gov ernment of the republic commenced and prosecuted the war, having had little experience in extended military operations, and being at the outset in a measure unprepared. In spite of those difficulties, however, but little more than two years was re quired to bring it to, a termination, and during that period American arms suffered no reverse.
