Excerpt from Leaves From Elim
Ir is the writer's pleasant fancy that these little bits of rhymes may be read under many a spreading tree during sunny summer days. The plentiful green grass will be the reader's couch, and the merry dancing leaves will make sweet music overhead. On the open page flecks of light will fall. The soft breeze will gently caress the tired face, and bring now the sound of the murmur of the brook, and now that of the exultant song of the lark or the thrush. Bees and butterflies will come near, and the scent of the hay will float over the hills and valleys, while the golden corn hangs out its banners, and the scarlet poppy lifts its head in warm greeting. In the distance will be the echo of the waves as they creep to the beach, and nearer the sound of village bells ringing festival music. And then may come the thought of other and more inspiring words than those which this book contains And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God, and of the Lamb. In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river was there the tree of life, which bore twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month, and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. May it be so! And God grant that under that tree we may all meet who have talked together of the Lamb in the midst of the throne, as we rested in our pilgrim-march by the wells and palm-trees of life's Elims.
