Excerpt from Theory of Flight

Although the book is meant as a text for students and engineers, it was not the author's purpose to supply the reader with ready-made formulas in which to substitute design data. Nor was it his intention to give a collection of results that the candidate for a degree should memorize. The book aims, as did the Fluglehre, to develop interest in and understanding of the fundamental ideas that underlie the design and the operation of modern aircraft. The problems inserted at the ends of the sections, particularly those marked by an asterisk, are intended to give some direction to the efforts of any reader who would apply himself toward a better comprehension of the diversified questions involved in the theory of airplane flight.

Excerpt from Theory of Flight

Thirty years ago, in the summer of 1913, the author gave for the first time a university course on the mechanics of airplane flight. On the basis of these lectures and similar ones in the following years there developed a small elementary textbook Fluglehre, which was pub lished up to 1936 in five German editions and translated into several languages. When asked, about three years ago, to prepare an English edition the author found that a book of somewhat different type would be more useful under the present conditions. There already exist in this country several introductory texts on the mechanics of flight suitable for beginners. On the other hand, a mature student or an engineer well versed in the advanced stages of higher mathematics can readily work his way through the currently published research papers. An actual demand does, however, seem to exist for a book at an intermediate level, say, on the borderline between the last year of college and the first year of graduate work. It is assumed that the reader of the present text knows the principles of calculus and has some training in general mechanics inso far as the standard college education provides for these things. Only such parts of the theory of flight as are understandable at this level are presented in the book, the mathematical theory of fluid mechanics thus being excluded.1 In order to keep the book within reasonable limits peripheral questions and many details in all topics have had to be omitted.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the intricate world of flight, exploring the fundamental principles that govern how airplanes stay aloft. The author meticulously examines the atmosphere, both at rest and in motion, laying the groundwork for understanding the forces that act upon aircraft. Bernoulli's equation, the interplay of momentum and energy, and the characteristics of perfect and viscous fluids are all carefully dissected. This exploration extends to the very heart of flight ââ â the airplane wing. The book analyzes the geometry of wings, delving into empirical data and theoretical models to explain how lift and drag are generated. The complex behavior of wings of finite span is also addressed, shedding light on the crucial role of vortex sheets and lift distribution. Propellers and engines, the powerhouses of flight, are given their due attention. The book examines propeller geometry and characteristics, providing a quantitative analysis of their performance. It also offers an insightful overview of airplane engine operation and the challenges posed by varying altitudes. Finally, the book tackles the critical aspects of airplane performance, control, and stability. It lays out the general performance problem, delving into power requirements and dimensionless analysis. Analytical methods for calculating performance are presented, along with discussions of specific challenges like gliding, landing, and seaplane operation. By illuminating the intricate tapestry of scientific principles that underpin flight, this book offers a profound appreciation for the marvels of modern aviation. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 9781333471606_0
