Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book details the founding of the Department of Archaeology at Phillips Academy as well as the author's role in the process. It is significant because it presents a unique perspective on the founding of an academic institution by a private citizen and the development of archaeology as an academic discipline. The author describes his experiences directing a team of explorers who participated in numerous excavations in New Mexico, Arizona, Kentucky, and Tennessee from 1897 to 1906. These expeditions resulted in the collection of over 11,000 artifacts, which were instrumental in establishing the department's museum as a leading institution for studying American Indian culture and history. The book sheds light on Native American art and customs in the American Southwest and Ohio Valley and offers valuable insights into the archaeological methods and practices of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
