Excerpt from The Architecture of the Renaissance in France, Vol. 1: A History of the Evolution of the Arts of Building, Decoration, and Garden Design Under Classical Influence From 1495 to 1830
All Renaissance architecture must in some degree be of a hybrid character, the resultant of an endeavour to clothe structures adapted to the requirements of a later age in a code of forms and proportions derived from the architecture of classical antiquity - to recast a national style in a classical mould. The character of the outcome of such a process of assimilation naturally varies in proportion to the force of resistance exerted by the national style. But it is not less interesting or valuable to study it when, as in the case of France, that resistance is strong, than when, as in the case of Italy, it hardly existed.
In Italy the distance traversed by the national styles from the common classical starting point was but small. And nothing is more striking in her mediaeval architecture than the persistence in it of classical traditions of wall and space composition, of horizontality and dead-weight construction, as well as of detail and features, and the influence they exerted upon exotic styles of diverse origin imported into the peninsula from time to time. At first, in Tuscany at least, the difference between the later Romanesque buildings and those affected by that study of ancient monuments which Brunelleschi revived, is principally manifested by a closer systematisation of design and increased refinement of detail.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book chronicles the radical transformation of French architecture from the late Gothic style to the dominance of Renaissance forms, spanning the period from 1495 to 1830. The author traces the dissemination of Italian Renaissance elements into France, beginning with the artistic patronage of the aristocracy who were enchanted with the Italian style, and continuing over several centuries with the growth of trade, exploration and evolving tastes. The author explores how French architects and artists fused the imported Italian Renaissance influences with native Gothic traditions, resulting in a distinctive French architectural style. The book delves into the political, social, and literary currents of the era to highlight the factors that shaped these architectural changes. Through the examination of notable buildings, including chateaux, religious edifices, and public structures in cities like Paris, Blois, and Fontainebleau, this book demonstrates the depth and nuance of the Renaissance architectural movement in France. It reveals the evolution of flamboyant Gothic into early Renaissance, and then onto the mature Renaissance style under successive reigns. The influence of Italian architects and their French counterparts, such as Philibert de l'Orme and Pierre Lescot, is explored in detail. The book concludes by highlighting the lasting impact of the Renaissance on French architecture, shaping its course for centuries to come and leaving an indelible mark on the country's architectural landscape.
