It is a matter of fome wonder, that though furveying appears to have been the firfilot at Leafi one of lthe'firfl: of the ma thematical fciences, that the rel't have met with much greater improvements from the pens Of the molt eminent mathematicians, while this feems to have been neglected; infomuch that I have not been able'to meet with one author, who has fulficiently ex plained the whole art in its theory and practice: mw, it has been treat ed Of ina'praé'tical manner only and the few who have undertaken the theory, have in a great meature omitted the practice, Thefe confiderations induced me to at tempt a methodical, eafy, and clear courfe of Surveying, how far I have fucceeded in it, Inuit be, determined by the impartial reader: the fleps I have taken to render the whole evident and familiar are as follow.
