The Select Committee convened to investigate Friendly Societies heard evidence from the author, Dr. Matthews, and others, leading to a series of conclusions and recommendations. The author believed that Friendly Societies, similar to those found in England, had been successful at mitigating sickness and economic hardships among working-class members. He further believed that the Cape's societies deserved official recognition and assistance. After reviewing existing practices in the Cape, the Committee agreed with the author's estimation of their societal value and recommended a system of government oversight for them. The report presented in this book provides insight into the formation of many of the assistance programs we take for granted today.
