The fluid measure used in pharmacy can always be reduced to drains - the equivalent of a teaspoonful. This being the measure ordinarily used in administering medicines, the quantity in a dose is readily ascertained. When, for example, one grain of morphine sul phate in one fluid ounce of water is prescribed, with directions one teaspoonful at a dose, it is readily computed that the quantity of morphine in each dose must be one-eighth of a grain, since one fluid ounce contains eight fluid drams or teaspoonfuls. Should eight grains of morphine sulphate in one ounce of water be prescribed with the same directions as above, the pharmacist at once computes the quantity of morphine in each dose to be one grain, and from this decides whether or not the mixture should be dispensed.
