Excerpt from Sympathetic Strikes and Sympathetic Lockouts
The federation of labor and the counter-federation of employers is the characteristic feature of the present epoch. A few years ago each Union was an independent organization though the sympathy between the different trades was strong, and showed itself repeatedly in the form of subscriptions to other trades when their members were on a strike or were locked out. But now the Union of men in a trade has developed into a Union of different trades together, and practical sympathy has taken the form of aiding a strike by striking also. This, of course, has the effect of increasing the area of the contest and of dragging into it persons not originally involved.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the rise of sympathetic strikes and lockouts, a new phenomenon of the late 19th century whereby workers not directly involved in a labour dispute would cease work in support of those who were. The author traces the origins of these tactics to the weakening of traditional picketing methods and the increasing power of labour unions. The book provides a detailed analysis of the different types of sympathetic strikes and lockouts, as well as their effectiveness and limitations. It also explores the ethical and economic implications of these tactics, and their role in the history of labour relations. By shedding light on this important chapter in labour history, this book helps us to better understand the complex dynamics of industrial conflict.
