Excerpt from Notes on Meteorology: Board of Trade, 1859
Meteorology is the science treating of air and water, wind and weather, heat, cold, and climate, in combination.
First, I shall endeavour to give a general view of the atmo sphere, in order that the explanations subsequently offered may be properly understood, and then I will make very brief allusions to some of the most useful instruments, not attempting anything like a complete description to those who are more conversant than I am with most of them, but simply alluding to particular points in which certain instruments now adopted are supposed to be better than those which were used some years ago, and drawing attention to some of their peculiarities.
