Excerpt from Studies on Standard Cells: A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of Princeton University in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy
The thermodynamics of the saturated combination has been investigated and satisfactory agreement between the heat of the reaction as calculated from the electromotive force data and that obtained from thermo - calomel measure ments has been established.
The phase rule investigation of the double salts used in the construction of the cells was carried out, and the curves obtained Show conclusively that these salts are stable in the presence of their own saturated solutions, over the range of temperature for which standard cells may be used.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book explores precision in science, particularly through the construction of standard cells. Early investigations focused on two combinations, the Clark cell and the Weston cell. The author delves into these cells, highlighting their advantages and limitations. The author posits that calomel could also serve as a depolarizer in constructing standard cells and describes a series of experiments using calomel. They meticulously detail their construction, measurements, and temperature coefficient analysis, demonstrating the reproducibility and constancy of these cells. The author investigates the thermodynamics of these cells, comparing their electromotive force data to established thermochemical measurements. They also explore the use of double salts in standard cells, conducting phase rule studies to determine their stability and utility. The book concludes with the construction, measurement, and analysis of cells using these double salts, providing valuable insights into their properties and potential applications.
