Excerpt from Colonel Daniel Putnam's Letter Relative to the Battle of Bunker Hill and General Israel Putnam
It was from such authority that the title Of General was first conferred on Col. Putnam, and it was reciprocally kept in view, by those who gave, and him who accepted it, until the decisive moment arrived which called him from his plough to join the patriot host at Cambridge. When this time came, he loitered not, but left me, the driver of his team, to unyoke it in the furrow, and not many days after to fol low him to camp.
