Before studying the relation of the Spanish version to the Latin mss of Odo, it is convenient to inquire whether the fable order as we have it in the codex represents the order of its Latin original. The original order of Odo's fables has been worked out, first approximately by Voigt,' and later completely by Hervieux.' The latter was in possession of more material for the task, and with a few corrections which I shall indicate in the footnotes, I accept as accurate the order he gives. On comparing the Gates fables as they appear in the codex or as published by Gayangos, it is at once apparent that the order difiers from Hervieux's norm. A single change, however, is all that is necessary to make the order of the Gates conform perfectly with that of the best Odo mss as determined by Hervieux. The displacement of one or two folios of a parent MS is what has caused the trouble, the question of the number of course depending upon the size of the folio of the parent ms. Fable XXIV, to use my system of numera tion, has been split into two parts by the insertion of the Enmienple dela gulpeja cenlas galinas (li); Emienple dale que acaescie ala gulpeja cenlas enejas (lii); Enwienple dcl cende cenles mercaderes (liii); and the first part of the Enxicnple dc tma eveja blanca e de en acne a an cabrcm (liv). In the middle of the latter story, the end of Fable XXIV awkwardly joins on. Also, at the place where the folio or folios dropped out, the junc tion is no less awkward. To the Enxienple dela gulpeja (l), is attached part of the moral of LIV.
