Excerpt from Positions of Fundamental Stars Deduced From Observations Made at the U. S. Naval Observatory Between the Years 1862 and 1867
It appears, then that in the case supposed, that in which the groups are of a uniform length of six hours, and the clock stars are scattered uniformly through each group, each revision of the fundamental catalogue will tend to diminish the error of single period by rather less than one-fifth, and that of double period by more than one-half. The latter will therefore be cut down much more rapidly than the former.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book details the rigorous systematic analysis of polar distances and right ascensions of fundamental stars derived from observations made between 1862 and 1867. The author scrutinizes possible causes of systematic error and accounts for discrepancies in reported star measurements, including diurnal and annual inequality as well as the effects of changes in temperature and barometric pressure. The author also addresses the pointing accuracy of the zenith telescope. Extending earlier research, the author establishes that mean pointing accuracy did not vary by a measurable amount over the five-year span of observations.
