Excerpt from The Logic of History
So it is with the historian. From a set of facts presented to his consciousness he is compelled to work backwards to a preceding set of facts, which is purely hypothetical. The nmnber of possible solutions is indefinite; the selection of the most acceptable one is the peculiar task to which he dooms himself. He must remember always that history is an hypothesis to account for the existence of facts as they are.
