Gazetteer (1886) is so complete in its topographical descriptions that it is on many points still the best book of reference we have. Eastman's History of the State of New York a text book, began with three chapters on natural geography of the State. In 1847 appeared a Geography of the State of New York an elaborate text-book of 482 pages, by J. H. Mather and L. P. Brockett, with out line maps of the counties.
But local geography gradually dropped out Of the curriculum until the Regents began to insert questions upon it. In the first 35 of the Regents' examinations the questions on New York geography amounted altogether to 23 out of 1064, and these were of such general interest that they should be answered by geography pupils in any State of the Union.
