It was here in the darkness of the night, the English stratagem, which brought about the thorough rout of the Armada, was carried into effect. Some old and useless hulks were filled with infiammables, and being towed and drifted silently among the Spanish ships were suddenly fired. The result (may be easily guessed a panic ensued, orders to cut cables were sounded, and on the 28th July (august 7) out of 124 ships then anchored, only 86 could the next day be found,* the rest had vanished in different directions in dismay. Although not a new idea, this stratagem was certainly one of the best tactics adopted throughout the whole period of the Invasion, for during the excitement the English took the opportunity of settling one of the largest galleasses, in which its Commander Hugh de Moncado with 400 of his men perished, and 300 slaves jumping overboard were liberated this was on the 29th J uly (august The Spaniards, followed by the English, steered along the coast of Flanders, but the wrecks needed little following; their work was done 5 wind and weather were to do the rest.
