The family is J ewish and the name was originally Levi. Following the custom of the J ews generally, a custom which dates from the time of the patriarchs, the family had but one name, but in accordance with a decree of Napoleon's in 1808, the grandfather of Ludovic was obliged to conform to the common ous tom of having, for purposes of registration, a family name as well as a surname, and accordingly called himself Halevy.
