Excerpt from The Word of the Buddha: An Outline of the Ethico-Philosophical System of the Buddha, in the Words of the Pali Canon, Together With Explanatory Notes
I would wish the Reader to know that The Word of the Buddha is not intended as an introduction to the teaching of the Buddha, or as a book on Buddhism merely to be read through and then laid aside. Its aims are, to pro vide a systematically arranged outline of the Buddha's doc trine for the benefit of such as are already acquainted with its fundamental ideas, and to bring under a single aspect the various parts of that doctrine which at first sight appear to have no connection with one another, but which in fact, when viewed from this aspect, are found all to converge upon a single point, - Deliverance from Suffering - as ex pressed by the Buddha Himself in the words I have used as motto One thing only, Brothers, do I make known Suffering and Deliverance from Suffering.
Thus it is that the teaching of the Eightfold Path leading to the cessation of suffering constitutes the real essence of Buddhist doctrine, and only from the standpoint of that teaching do the different details find their due place.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the core teachings of early Buddhist philosophy, exploring the Four Noble Truths ââ â a foundational framework for understanding and overcoming suffering. Originating in ancient India around the 6th century BC, these truths provide a systematic approach to achieving liberation from the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. The author meticulously examines each truth, utilising the Buddha's own words as recorded in the Sutta-Pitaka, a collection of discourses within the Pali Canon ââ â the earliest known Buddhist scriptures. The exploration delves into the nature of suffering, its causes, the possibility of its cessation, and the path to achieve this liberation. This path, known as the Eightfold Path, encompasses ethical conduct, mental discipline, and wisdom, offering a practical guide for navigating life's challenges and attaining lasting peace. Through detailed analysis and insightful commentary, the book unravels complex concepts such as the Five Aggregates of Existence, the nature of consciousness, and the impermanence of all phenomena. It illuminates the profound interconnection between our thoughts, actions, and experiences, revealing how clinging to desire and self-illusion perpetuates suffering. Ultimately, the book's insights offer a transformative perspective on the human condition, guiding readers towards a life of greater awareness, compassion, and liberation from suffering.
