Excerpt from The Pneumatic Despatch Tube System of the Batcheller Pneumatic Tube Co
I have been prompted to prepare this book by the frequent inquiries made regarding the details of our sys tem of pneumatic tubes. These inquiries have come from people interested in our company, from others interested in companies that have purchased the right to use our apparatus, from people desirous of becoming interested in a pneumatic-tube business, from would-be purchasers of pneumatic tubes, and from people interested in pneu matic tubes from a scientific, engineering, or mechanical point of View. This book is not intended to be a treatise on pneumatic tubes. In the first chapter I have given a brief sketch of what has been done in the application of pneumatic tubes from the earliest records to the present time. The second chapter contains a description of the postal tubes in Philadelphia, and the third chapter de scribes our system in detail. Following this is a Short chapter explaining the theory of pneumatic tubes, or the theory of the ?ow of air in long pipes, stating the more.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating world of pneumatic tubes, a technology that once held great promise for rapid communication and transportation. The author traces the history of pneumatic tubes from their earliest recorded origins in the 17th century to their eventual adoption for mail delivery and telegraph transmission in cities like London, Berlin, and Paris. The book meticulously examines the innovations of key figures like Denis Papin, Josiah Latimer Clark, and Carl Siemens, detailing the evolution of design and operation from the rudimentary single-tube vacuum systems to the more sophisticated circuit and radial systems that allowed for multi-directional and multi-station transmission. The book then shifts focus to the first successful implementation of pneumatic tubes for the transportation of U.S. mail in Philadelphia. The author provides a detailed account of the Pneumatic Transit Company, its organizational goals, and its partnership with the Electro-Pneumatic Transit Company. The reader learns about the engineering challenges encountered, including the need for highly accurate tubing and the difficulties posed by extreme weather conditions. A significant portion of the book is devoted to the design and construction of the Philadelphia postal tubes, as well as a thorough explanation of the air compressor system and the specialized apparatus for sending and receiving carriers. The book concludes with a discussion of the various applications of pneumatic tubes beyond the postal system, including their use in retail stores, telegraph companies, and hotels. This book offers a valuable insight into the history and development of this once-prominent technology, exploring its technical challenges, design innovations, and the practical limitations that ultimately contributed to its decline.
