Excerpt from A Grammar of the Latin Language
It must be observed, that the author's design has not been to comprehend the whole history of the Latin language, but to furnish the means of forming a Latin prose style, upon the model of the purest writers of the golden age - the age of Cicero and Caesar. The pedantry which would confine the choice of words and phrases to one age and a single author, however emi nent, has long since been ridiculed and ex ploded; but, for rules of construction, designed to assist in composing in an ancient language, there is not only no occasion to have recourse to a variety of models, but the attemptto com bine the practice of different ages would pro duce an incongruous mixture. The effect is the same when poetic constructions are introduced into prose. The Author of this Grammar has adopted so strict a principle, as not only every where to 'found his rules upon the practice of the great prose writers of the period which I have mentioned, but even to consider as devi ations, to be marked rather than copied, those constructions which, being of rare occurrence in their works, have been sometimes considered as elegances, deserving of especial imitation.
