Excerpt from The Provincial Letters of Pascal
A book written by the notorious literary free-lance Ga rasse, in which the paradoxes and the laxity of his colleagues were carried to a ridiculous extreme, called forth from the Abbé de saint-cyran an annihilating criticism'. The Society, although somewhat ashamed of their champion, could not disavow principles which were to be found under the approbation of its generals, and felt that saint-cyran's strokes passed over the prostrate Garasse into their own stronghold. This was the first skirmish in the great war in which Pascal was to take so important a part.

Paperback. Zustand: New. Print on Demand. This book is an edited collection of Pascal's Provincial Letters, a series of polemical letters criticizing the moral teachings of the Jesuits. The letters were written in the 17th century, during a time when the Catholic Church was engaged in a series of internal conflicts, and they offer a unique insight into the religious controversies of the period. The author argues that the Jesuits had departed from the true teachings of the Church, and that their moral teachings were lax and indulgent. He supports his argument with a wealth of evidence, drawn from the writings of Jesuit theologians and from the decisions of Jesuit confessors. This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of Catholicism or in the development of moral theology. It is also a fascinating read for anyone interested in the power of language and the art of persuasion. The author's writing is sharp, witty, and often laugh-out-loud funny, and his insights into human nature are as relevant today as they were in the 17th century.
