Excerpt from Official History of the Operations of the First Washington Infantry, U. S. V. In the Campaign in the Philippine Islands
San Francisco was ablaze with the spirit abroad in the land and incoming regi ments from the sister States had been received and welcomed with no uncertain chivalry and hospitality. Unlike the rest, the W'ashington Battalion had stolen quietly into the confines of the city unobserved, but it was too marked a body of men to remain long undiscovered. The superior excellence of the command and the accomplishments of officers and men soon brought to the attention of the citi zens these battalions, and from this until their final embarkation for Manila regard for them increased with their stay.
