Excerpt from A Commentary, With Notes, on Part of the Book of the Revelation of John
We have the tefiimony of the apofile himfelf, that he received this Revelation while he was ba nilhed in the ifle of Patmos and we learn from the tefiimony of Antiquity, that this was in the perfecution that was raifed againfi the Chrifiians by the Emperor DO mitian. It is therefore, with good reafon, that the learned and in duf'trious Dr. Lardner has fixed the date of this Book to the year of our Lord 96. 1 know that feveral commentators, and critics of great name have l'trongly contended, that it ought to be carried back to a much earlier period, and that it can fcarcely be later than the time of Claudius, or of Nero.
