Excerpt from A System of Botanical Analysis Applied to the Diagnosis of British Natural Orders: For the Use of Beginners
Lichenacee. Aerial plants. Thallus leathery, horny, crustaceous, or pulverulent.~ Propagation by green cells (gonidia), which are produced in the central cellular substance of the thallus, and which give rise to vegetative reproduction when set free and by spores produced in spore-sacs (asci), formed in shield-shaped expansions (apothecia) or in excavated chambers rithecia). Representatives of antheridia are formed in special excavations (spermagonia), and produce minute, motionless, acilliform fertilizing corpuscles (spermatia).
