Excerpt from Plane and Spherical Trigonometry
The present text aims to present the trigonometry in such a way as to make it interesting to students approach ing some maturity, and so as to connect the subject, not only with the mathematics which the student has already had, but also with the mathematics which, in many cases at least, is to follow. A subject may be so burdened with detailed explanations as to become monotonous and lifeless, or, on the other hand, presented in so concise and difficult a manner as to be repellent. The present work endeavors to avoid both extremes. Full explanations are given of im portant principles, but many simple details are left to the work of the student.

By using a system of rectangular coordinates, the author defines and discusses the trigonometric functions for all angles, not just acute angles. Expanding on these definitions, the book continues by introducing key identities and relationships between trigonometric functions, including addition and subtraction formulas, double and half-angle formulas, and more. It is an excellent choice for students of trigonometry looking to enhance their understanding of the fundamentals or for anyone seeking a refresher on this important topic. By delving into foundational theory and including a thorough exploration of applicable formulas, the book offers a deeper understanding of the functions that are essential in a wide range of mathematical and scientific disciplines.
